  To Owen... (20 months old)

You are getting so big and tall! I could really tell how tall you are getting when I saw you standing up next to Wyatt the other day. He is still taller than you, but not by as much as the last time I saw the two of you together. You are now wearing size 3T clothes and 7 1/2 extra wide shoes.

The new height and the increased climbing agility have coupled to allow you to get into almost anything in our house. And, most of the childproofing attempts we have made, are completely useless now. You can climb up onto our bed in almost no time at all. You can climb right into your highchair, onto the couch, the coffee table, and even the kitchen table if you are motivated enough. You move the barrier around the TV like it is nothing at all. The other day, you pushed a big plastic tub up to the bookcase in the kitchen, climbed on it and got the apples out of the fruit basket on the top of the bookcase. You tried to bounce them on the ground and thought that was quite funny.

Words you are saying now: mama, dada/daddy, hi, hey, hi there, bye, no, all done (this sort of sounds like "hot dog"), thank you, dog, book, bird, happy, uh-oh, cat, car, round and round, bite, do it, up, cracker, ball, bubble, that, balloon. Not many of these words are very clear, but we know what you're trying to say. And I think the meaning of these words is sometimes a little bit muddled. You still insist on calling trains cars, for instance.

You love to run and as soon as you step outside of the garage you squeal with delight. You walk and run all over our street whenever you have a chance. You have figured out how to get on and off of your little ride-on cars and can actually make yourself move around by pushing with your feet and legs.

You like to clap. Any time you hear people clapping, you join in, including when you hear it on TV.

You really enjoy toys that play music and you love to dance. You stomp your feet and move your arms and shake your head any time you hear music. The past couple of times we have eaten at the Mexican restaurant, you seem to really enjoy the mariachi music they play. You also dance to the sounds of the kitchen timer, the alarm clock, the washing machine, the telephone ring, the windshield wipers and just about anything else rhythmic.

You loved Halloween because you got to run up and down the street in the dark. Our neighborhood is kind of a madhouse for Halloween and you loved having all that activity on our street.

Going out to eat is a little more challenging than it used to be. I can now sort of entertain you by coloring with crayons, but you still try to eat the crayons when I look away. You seem to be getting tired of being in a high chair, but you are not controllable enough yet to sit in a booster seat.

It is really difficult to not laugh at some of the things you do that you might shouldn't do. The other night while I was talking on the phone and filling up the bathtub, you kept throwing things in the bath every time I took my eyes off of you. You threw some of your daddy's shorts from the dirty laundry into the tub. Then, after I changed your diaper, you started grabbing wipes and throwing them into the tub. Finally, after you threw the biggest pile of dirty laundry that you could carry into the tub, I decided I needed to get off the phone.

We went to the Children's museum in Atlanta the other day. It was just you, daddy and me. You liked the balls and wheels and train and anything else that turned around and around. I love spending time together as a family.

Yesterday, I went to pick you up after you stayed with Granny for a couple of hours. I drove up in the driveway and saw you and Granny sitting on a bench. As I got closer, you started to recognize that it was me. Your face just started to light up. Your smile got bigger and bigger and when I got out of the car you ran towards me and threw your arms around me and started to climb up into my arms. It was so sweet that it made my heart hurt. I love you so much!

Love, Mama

  Thomas and Spiderman
Here are some pictures taken by my dad and Jake of Ethan and Wyatt. By the way, if you are interested, go to October 2005 in my archives to see Ethan as Thomas. Of course, he is a year older than Wyatt is in these photos, but I still think they look a lot alike.
